"You can't educate a child who isn't healthy and you can't keep a child healthy who isn't educated."
m. Jocelyn Elders, MD U.S. Surgeon General

Your school nurse can be reached by contacting your school office or leave a message with Renville County Public Health at 320-523-2570.

The primary role of the School Nurse is to support student learning. The nurse accomplishes this by implementing strategies that promote student and staff health and safety. The school nurse, as part of the school team, takes a leadership role in serving as coordinator of school health programs.

  • Health Services and Screening: Screenings such as vision and hearing help identify any barriers that would impair a child’s ability to learn. Early Childhood Screening –mandatory for children after age 3 but before entering kindergarten, is provided by nurses and school personnel.
  • Immunization Management: All student records are reviewed for required immunizations and to assure compliance with state law for the protection of the entire student body.
  • Medication Management: If your child must take medications during the school day, the School Nurse will help to manage this medication.
  • Health Education: Identifies health and safety concerns in the school environment.
  • Nutritional Services: Supports health food services programs.
  • Physical Education / Activity: Promote healthy physical education, sports policies and practices.
  • Health Counseling: Provides health counseling, assesses mental health needs, provides intervention and refers students to school or community resources.
  • Parent / Community Involvement: Promotes community involvement in assuring a healthy school, serves as school liaison to a health advisory committee.

Renville County Public Health contracts with BLHS, BOLD, Cedar Mountain and St. Mary’s schools for student health services. Renville County Public Health also provides support to GFW and RCW schools. All schools are required to have health services and follow state and federal guidelines on health and safety.
